It's a fascinating story about growing up in Lewiston NY in the 50's. This book was new and was in perfect condition. It arrived within a week. Since I also grew up in Lewiston, I found I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it.
Growing up across the river from Lewiston, I am very familiar with the area the author writes about, making it all the more poignant and significant. I read parts to my husband and he laughed out loud. All I can say is "Wow.". Then I picked it up and began. Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize winner, meet your match. My sister had passed this book to me and suggested I would enjoy it. I was captured, enraptured and often I laughed out loud, which is just not me.
I sadly passed the book back to my sister but decided to order a copy and send it to my son back in Ontario, who is now reading it. Gildiner is a writer on par with Richard Russo who wrote 'Empire Falls' and 'Nobody's Fool'. I cried and my laughing tears mingled with my sad tears. She is a tad pushy so I resentfully procrastinated until I ran out of books to read. I could not stop reading until the very last word. Reading this book is like all the 'zen' things I love rolled into one. Enough said.Liz Roy, Author of 'To The Moon and Back; journey of the soul'.
This memoir is a kick in the pants. I regret not having sat next to her in school- what a hoot. At each reading, I found myself laughing out loud. Her voice stays with you long after finishing the last page. I am going to buy multiple copies to give to my friends- I want to keep my own copy to remember how much I enjoyed hearing from this unusual, clever person. I am glad to know she is publishing a sequel.
It is laugh-out-loud funny. I recently received a Kindle and have been pretty selective about what I download. It was cleverly written and I loved all of the characters in this book as well. This book was reviewed in our local paper, I checked other reviews, and downloaded. I don't know when I have enjoyed a book more. Can't wait for Ms. Gildiner to write another book - I adore her writing style.
my mother was NEVER the mayor. I grew up in Lewiston and my parents were mentioned in the book several times. My mother, Betty Helms, was referred to as the mayor of Lewiston. My father who also was mentioned never would order a "Black Russsian" in his entire life at any bar (he wouldn't know what it was. he only drank beer) interesting book, but not factual more fiction and as much as my parents would have loved being mentioned, I believe that like others from this wonderful village would have preferred the author to check her facts before writing the book.Deborah (Helms) Bates
